Our WOrk
The Alice Elizabeth Stone Foundation efforts are concentrated in sustainability and opportunity in education, the environment, and animal welfare. Our goal is to ensure that progressive ideas for improving the planet and lives of underrepresented groups are shared and supported. The primary vehicles for this work are the Foundation’s small grants programs, supporting first generation North American indigenous college students, and both individuals and organizations involved in environmental improvement and animal welfare/rights. Individuals and organizations complete the Foundation’s micro-grant application, describing their project and needs, and submit during application acceptance periods. Funds made available require awardees to document their progress and efforts at the end of the grant period.
Who We are
The namesake for the Alice Elizabeth Stone Foundation was a tireless champion for environmental and animal welfare. During her lifetime Mrs. Stone worked to improve our world, including the conditions of animals held in unsustainable and barbaric conditions at zoological parks. For example, her campaign for changes at what is now called the Tampa Zoo at Lowry Park, in Tampa, Florida, resulted in major systemic improvements. Her compassion for wildlife and her commitment to education and the improvement of our ecosystems became the inspiration for the Foundation which bears her name.
Led by Dr. Gregory E. Stone, Chair, the Foundation is governed by a board of directors who provide oversight, direction, fiscal accountability, and ensure regulatory compliance. The Foundation is listed as a 501c3 charitable corporation, established initially from a generous grant from the estate of Carl Elmer and Alice Elizabeth Stone and supported annually through gifts from the estate and other individuals and corporations.
